The first day of our course is an orientation. You will learn about the approach to studying workplace interactions we will be using - conversation analysis - the assessment requirements during this course, and the topics we will explore in these subject.
Let’s begin with introductions!
Dja Dja Wurrung Country. Profound respects to the Jaara people, and the knowledge of Elders who inform our understanding of the world. A warm welcome to First Nations people in our group, and appreciation for contributing to our learning.
Whereabouts in the world are you?
What languages do we have in our team?
(any languages other than English, please add to the chat)
And what name would you prefer?
Please add to this list, and then change name on zoom. If you’re not on the list, please add name at the bottom.
And for zoom, cameras MUST be used for breakout room discussions, and we’ll take it in turns during the lecture. (A, B, C, D)
In the spirit of sharing knowledge…
Task 1 (complete today): Add your short life hack video (no more than 20 seconds - and no more than 20 minutes preparing!). Something that you think the whole group would find useful. Share here!
Please note this task is a hurdle requirement (i.e. part of today’s workshop time).
How is the course organised?
8 key topics.
For each topic: (1) Essential reading(s); (2) Zoom Seminar; (3) Online Workshop.
Quiz question to complete for each topic.
What will we be learning in this course?
Assessment
There are three pieces of assessment in this subject. Let’s look at the overview together.
Do you have any questions about the assignments? Discuss with your group and note your questions here.
Questions about assessment?
Throughout the course, I’ll be updating FAQs about the assignments. Check these FAQs in the assessment module, but if you still are unclear, simply email Amelia with your question.
Why is this course based on research in conversation analysis?
Thanks for your patience in this slow start to the course. Once you’ve completed the workshop activity (watching a lecture by Prof. Liz Stokoe and answering some easy questions), we’ll be ready to launch into the course properly with Topic 1 on Turntaking!
